Basketball
Plays
So you have taught your team the fundamentals
and they are ready for some basketball plays. Look at the plays as a
tool for the players to use to move the ball into the basket
and to put good use of all their fundamental skills they have
been working on.
Start out with basic and simple
plays.

Jump ball
Plays
In Offensive plays teach them about positioning,
getting open, motion and patience. Show them how to
compensate for whatever defense throws at them. Teach them how to get
a good position for a shot. Once they understand
the basic movements then you can talk to them about give and
go, backdoor plays, pick and rolls, etc.
With Defensive plays show them first how to stay
between the offense and the basket, watching the core of the
offensive player dribbling to guard them, always knowing where
the ball is at all times. Then when they
understand these basics begin to show them Zone defenses and
man to man defense.
In-bound plays explain how your players will get
the ball onto the court in all types of situations. How they bring the
ball in while under their basket, or on the side of the court,
or while they are being pressed by the other team. Explain that these in
bound plays are used as a tool to move the ball in
quickly.
Every player on your team should know how the
Jump ball works.
They should understand where each position stands in
setting up for the jump ball. Then they need to know
when the ball is tapped to each position, what that player
needs to do with it and how all the other players on the court
react to that.
Just remember, is teaching players
plays of any type explain the play to them step by step.
- Set them up on the court in the position they
start.
- Walk them through the
play.
- Then let them walk through the play
slowly.
- Then practice it again and again in
scrimmages.
Learn the basic plays first and then add on as
your team becomes more proficient.
